Best Days offers a lovely listen with a clean, fresh sound by this talented young artist. Even the “love songs” (which actually have some pretty intelligent lyrics) are upbeat and danceable. White’s range is incredible and his vocals are stellar.
The opening track, “Play,” is sweet and soulful with some lovely piano work by White. The title track is seriously infectious with an absolutely irresistible hook. “I’ll Be There” is a bit softer than the first two, though it’s far from a ballad, and it features an amazing string section. “Moment of Weakness” is probably one of the weaker tracks here, the lyrics are just a bit too predictable and the pace is somewhat slow. But things definitely pick up with “Love.” This one has more delightful piano stylings and a bouncy, energetic melody reminiscent of the 1930s classic, “Heart and Soul.” “New York Girls” is upbeat with a powerful bass line. “Miracles” is a sultry ballad with some nice pedal steel work by Greg Leisz. “Wait for Love” is another ballad with some beautiful harp stylings by White. “Anybody Else” is upbeat and danceable with a sound a bit reminiscent of a Blues Traveler. “Paradise” is yet another ballad, this one with gorgeous vocal harmonies.
All songs here were written by Matt White, who proves to be a generously gifted and promising artist. Best Days is a fine debut and I’m sure there will be more great works to look forward to.
