Smiley Face

Jane F. (Anna Faris), an aspiring actress, really can’t aspire to anything except getting stoned. A self-absorbed pot-head, she can barely function in life.

One morning, during her usual high, she gets an incredible case of the munchies. Upon opening the refrigerator, she finds a plate of cupcakes. They’re accompanied by a note from her roommate, Steve (Danny Masterson), instructing her not to eat them because they’re for the “Sci-Fi Extravaganza,” but she ignores the note and gobbles them up, figuring that she can just replace them. Unfortunately, they’re filled with pot, and now she’s more stoned than ever. Since she’s broke, how is she going to buy the weed to put in the cupcakes? She can use the money designated to pay the power bill. Oh yes…she has an audition to go to. After the audition, she’ll go to her ATM to get the money to pay the bill.

When her drug dealer, Steve (Adam Brody)—not to be confused with her roommate, Steve—arrives at her apartment, he informs her that she’s short. He spots her, but he threatens to take her furniture if she doesn’t meet him at the 33rd Annual Hemp Festival in Venice Beach by 3 p.m.

Calamities ensue, starting with Jane’s attempt to sauté the leaves, proceeding to her audition, and continuing all the way through her bumming rides to the festival. In between, she unknowingly smashes a boy’s toy car on the bus, finds herself in a meat processing plant, and gets hold of the original Communist Manifesto.

Sounds hilarious? No. Ridiculous? Yes. Watching the mishaps of a stoner can only go so far. In this case, it never begins. I can’t figure out what led such talented actors—including Roscoe Lee Browne, Jane Lynch, and Danny Trejo—to be part of such a disaster. Luckily for them, they only play minor roles.

Slapstick can be funny, but this sure isn’t. The film isn’t at all dark or even crude—just incredibly silly. As I watched, I kept trying to figure out who Smiley Face would appeal to. Maybe only true pot-heads would enjoy it—but, then again, they’d probably pass out first.
