After my introduction to Pucca and her friends in the delightfully different .com/articles/08/NW0800140.php>Ninjas Love Noodles, I couldn’t wait to check out the other Pucca DVD, Kung Fu Kisses. Once again, the basic story is the same: Pucca is a sweet and spunky little girl who lives in Sooga Village with her three uncles who run the village’s favorite noodle restaurant. While noodles are her uncle’s great love, Garu is Pucca’s great love. Though focused and devoted ninja Garu shows absolutely no interest in Pucca (actually, he usually tries to run away from her), that doesn’t stop her from standing by her man—and stealing kisses whenever she can.
The 13 short episodes on this DVD focus more on the girls—and on the girlier topics—than those on Ninjas Love Noodles. In one episode, Pucca becomes a model—and, in another, she competes with Ring Ring for the title of Little Miss Sooga. And, throughout Kung Fu Kisses, love is in the air. Pucca’s best friend, Ching, tries to get the attention of martial-arts-obsessed Bruce Lee lookalike, Abyo. An international superstar falls in love with Pucca—and Garu tries to help him win her. Even rival ninja Tobe falls in love—after he’s struck by Cupid’s arrow.
Though the episodes on Kung Fu Kisses are still as quirky and entertaining as those on Ninjas Love Noodles—and the characters are still every bit as amusing (there’s even a special appearance by Elvis in “Dance Pucca Dance”)—the audience won’t be quite the same. There isn’t as much action this time around—and there’s more mushy, girly stuff, too. So while boys will probably enjoy Ninjas Love Noodles, with its kung fu action and its entertainingly odd adventures, they might not be all that excited about watching Pucca try on wedding dresses.
But while Kung Fu Kisses isn’t quite as boy-friendly as Ninjas Love Noodles, it’s a great cartoon collection for girls. Though Pucca is just an animated little girl who doesn’t say a word, she’ll show girls that you can be both smart and charming—and you can be both girly enough to love wearing dresses and tough enough to stand up for yourself (and the people you care about).
Pick up a copy of Kung Fu Kisses for your favorite sweet and spunky little girl. Just be sure to send the boys outside to play before you pop it into the DVD player.
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee.
