Just in case you can’t make it out to Southern California to visit Knitport, shop owner and knitwear designer Phuong My Ly is happy to bring a little bit of Knitport to you in her book, Chic Knits.
Chic Knits is a collection of 17 of Ly’s designs. Here, you’ll find a little bit of everything—from summery tops (like the fitted tank shown on the cover) to wraps and cozy sweaters to felted bags. The book opens with a section of full-color photographs of all of the designs that are featured in the book—just to give you a quick overview. And the designs and patterns (complete with even more photographs—as well as plenty of diagrams and illustrations) follow.
It isn’t every day that I find a knitting book that’s filled with things I’d love to wear—but that’s the case with Chic Knits. I love the wraps and shrugs. I even love the cape—though I still can’t decide if I’d actually wear it. But the book is filled with winning designs—simple, but stylish.
Of course, as with any knitting book, there are a couple of misses, too. For instance, I just can’t understand why people still insist on designing knit bikinis—despite the fact that they’re completely impractical. And while Ly’s two felted bags (complete with fun felted flowers) are cute, they look the same—and they’re similar to many other felted bag patterns out there. Other than that, though, my only other complaint is that the adorable raglan Boyfriend Sweater should have been designed from the top down.
As for the patterns themselves, there are a few easy patterns (the wraps and the Boyfriend Sweater), but most of the patterns are for more advanced knitters. The patterns aren’t especially complex, but there are often lace and cable details to add a bit of visual interest. So as long as you can do simple lace and cables, you should be okay with most of the patterns in the book.
Chic Knits offers a variety of designs, made with a variety of fibers. So whether you’re looking for an oversized sweater that’s perfect for cuddling in front of the fire on a cold, winter night or shimmering shrugs and wraps to wear as a cover-up for a night on the town, you’ll find plenty of cute, wearable items for every season and every occasion.
