When I received my copy of Kitty’s House of Horrors, I couldn’t resist diving right into it. Kitty Norville is everything that I love in a supernatural heroine: she’s tough but tender, and she does what it takes to protect those she loves, all without turning into a bitch.
This time, Kitty gets talked into doing a supernatural reality show along with a few other supernatural creatures of the night. She’s not crazy about it, but it might be good publicity for her talk radio show, The Midnight Hour.
The cast members arrive at a remote hunting lodge in Montana, where they will spend the next two weeks being filmed as they interact with each other. Eventually, Kitty will have to shift into a wolf to satisfy the producers—and to convince the one skeptic along for the ride that she and the rest are for real.
At first, things seem to be going okay, but then the filming stops, the production crew goes missing, and cast members start dying. Kitty soon learns that they are part of a wicked plot, in which their deaths are the ultimate outcome. Stranded with no power and no phones, she must learn who she can trust and find a way to get the remaining members out alive. But someone out there has something to prove, and they’re very, very good at what they do.
Anyone who reads my reviews knows that, in any novel, I need great characterization to go along with fast-paced, kick-butt action. Author Carrie Vaughn doesn’t disappoint with her seventh Kitty Norville novel, Kitty’s House of Horrors. She even brings in a character who isn’t a part of the reality show, making me itch to go back and pick up her backlist to spend more time with this character (hopefully he’ll be in future novels, too). But this novel also has a few memorable new characters, with whom you’ll want to spend more time in the future. The magician, whose vanishing act can send volunteers into another dimension, is one of my favorites.
The chilling moments, laced with mystery and a whole lot of death-defying action, will draw you in to this spellbinding urban fantasy, where shape-shifters, vampires, and psychics are a normal part of the world. But they’re also hunted by those who fear them and don’t understand them—hence the reality show turned snuff film.
With plenty of horror-filled moments and nerve-wracking suspense, Kitty’s House of Horrors will keep you hanging by your fingernails each time the action tosses you over the edge of a cliff. So find a quiet corner and a couple of hours of uninterrupted time—because, once you begin, you definitely won’t want to put down Kitty’s House of Horrors.
