Today I’m blogging from the middle of game geek heaven — the Origins Game Fair. It’s the place to be for anyone who loves games…
Origins takes place at the Columbus Convention Center — which is especially convenient for me, since I happen to live a half hour away. So after catching up on some work this morning, I made my way to the convention center at around 10.
For those of you who have never been to a gaming con like Origins, think Star Trek convention — only with a whole lot more variety. There are all kinds of costumes, representing various role playing games. For instance, the first person I saw this morning when I got out of the elevator was a very large man in medieval gear, complete with chain mail. I’ve seen warriors of all shapes and sizes (as well as plenty of wenches in all shapes and sizes).
Origins is a four-day event — and there’s definitely plenty to do for four days straight. There are all kinds of events and weaponry demonstrations and demos and things. But I’m focusing on the main exhibit hall, which is where all of the game companies set up their latest games for sale and/or demo. So I’ve been wandering around, meeting all kinds of people and learning about all kinds of new games.
After a couple of hours of braving the crowds, I decided that it was time to unload some of my new acquisitions at the car and take a lunch break. But now I’m ready to regroup here in the press room and plan my afternoon attack.
Later today, I’ll be sure to post another update. Until then, I’m headed back to the trenches…
Kristin Dreyer Kramer has been writing in some form or another (usually when she was supposed to be doing something else) since the ripe old age of ten—when she, her cousin, and their two Cabbage Patch Dolls formed the Poo Authors’ Club. After a short career in advertising, Kristin got sick of always saying nice things about stuff that didn’t deserve it—so now she spends her days criticizing things, and she’s much happier for it.
Since creating NightsAndWeekends.com in February of 2002, Kristin has spent her life surrounded by piles and piles of books and movies—so many that her office has become a kind of entertainment obstacle course.
As if her writing and editing responsibilities for N&W.com weren’t enough to keep her out of trouble, Kristin also hosts a number of weekly radio shows: Reel Discovery, Shelf Discovery, and On the Marquee. She’s also a proud member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (CriticsChoice.com), the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (COFCA.org), the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS.org), and the Women Film Critics Circle (WFCC.Wordpress.com).
Kristin lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Anna. She welcomes questions, comments, and fan mail at kdk@nightsandweekends.com.
