This time of year brings a whole lot of award hopeful films—the movies that will make you think, make you cry, or just make you scratch your head. But in the midst of all of the heavy drama of another Award Season, The Marvels is here to help you relax, unwind, and enjoy a little bit of superhero fun.
The Marvels finds a trio of heroes forced to work together to save the universe from its latest threat. When Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is sent to investigate a strange surge in a jump point in the universe, her powers become entangled with two other heroes with light powers: Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). As they try to figure out how to work with their newly glitching powers, they also find themselves battling a vengeful Kree leader (Zawe Ashton) who’s determined to heal her planet, no matter what it takes.
Meanwhile, while battling otherworldly villains, these intertwined heroes also manage to provide some refreshingly easy-going entertainment. In recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has gotten incredibly complicated. In order to stay on top of all of the characters and references and storylines, you’d need to watch (and re-watch) all of the previous films, along with hours and hours of series on Disney+. And, even then, you might not fully understand everything without reading the comics.
Admittedly, The Marvels builds on a couple of series and a movie or two, but it keeps everything pretty simple. This isn’t really a movie for the Marvel scholars, who get excited about long movies with complex, overlapping multiverse storylines. Instead, it’s more for the viewers who just love to get caught up in a fun superhero movie—a movie with plenty of action and light-hearted laughs, too.
These three heroes make a likable trio: the scientist, the tough girl, and the teenage fangirl. They’re all so different, but their connections—and their constantly glitching powers—add the right touches of tension and drama in with its sometimes over-the-top laughs. It certainly has its cheesy moments, but that’s just what makes it so enjoyable. It’s a short, simple, and action-packed story about relationships and responsibility—with some alien cats thrown in for fun.
For die-hard Marvel fans, The Marvels may be a little too fluffy. But if you’re just looking for some light entertainment to help you unwind during a busy, stressful holiday season, you’ll be thankful for this fun-filled superhero adventure.
Team up with this trio of heroes when The Marvels arrives in theaters on November 10, 2023.
