Some of the most harrowing thrillers are inspired by true stories—stories of real people overcoming seemingly impossible challenges. And that’s certainly the case for Society of the Snow (La sociedad de la nieve), a gripping real-life thriller following a group of plane crash survivors and their fight to survive deadly conditions.
Society of the Snow tells the remarkable true story of a flight from Uruguay to Chile that crashed in the Andes Mountains in October of 1972, leaving the survivors stranded in a deadly environment, with limited resources for survival. The passengers—mostly made up of a college rugby team and their friends and family—work together to gather supplies and tend to the injured, creating a shelter from the elements inside the wreckage. But as the days pass without rescue, they’re forced to make some difficult decisions for their own survival.
While the scenes of turbulence and panic and the eventual crash are absolutely brutal and horrifying to watch, that’s just the beginning of this grueling experience. As the snow swirls around the wreckage and the temperatures plummet, this small group of survivors begins to understand the harshness of their surroundings. They may have survived the crash, but now they’ll have to survive the elements. They begin scrambling to clear out the plane, find food and extra clothing, and care for those who were wounded in the crash.
Every day brings new challenges—and a flood of emotions—for the survivors. Though their first days are filled with hope and anticipation as they wait for rescue, when they manage to fix a radio, they learn that the rescue mission has been put on hold until the thaw. As their hopes come crashing down, a new reality sets in—and they have to stay strong and work together to put new plans in place.
Through every loss, every challenge, every moment of fear and desperation—whether the characters are battling the elements in the vast frozen terrain or huddled together in the relative safety of the wreckage—the film overwhelms viewers with the sheer terror of this situation, offering only the occasional moments of relief. It’s a gripping and emotional experience that will leave audiences feeling amazed and exhausted.
With its unbelievable true story of determination and survival, Society of the Snow is difficult to watch—but incredibly moving, too. It’s not a film for the faint of heart, but it’s worth experiencing.
You can join the fight for survival when Society of the Snow arrives on Netflix on January 4, 2024.
