When Disney acquired Fox and its properties in 2019, it offered up a whole lot of new moviemaking possibilities—especially where the Marvel Cinematic Universe was concerned. And the X-Men/Marvel/Fox mash up Deadpool & Wolverine takes full advantage of all of the new crossover possibilities.

Deadpool & Wolverine finds Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) struggling to live a normal life—until he’s dragged away from his birthday party by the TVA and informed that his entire universe is about to be terminated. Determined to save his friends, Wade comes up with a plan to travel through the multiverse to find the one hero who can help him: Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). But instead of saving the universe, they’re banished to a wasteland known as The Void, where they have to team up with other forgotten heroes to fight back.

From the opening scenes of this irreverent and over-the-top mutant mash up, it’s clear that not much has changed in Deadpool’s unexpectedly crumbling universe. He’s still as wild and crude and outrageous as ever—and maybe even more so—with his ultraviolent fight sequences, his relentless innuendo, his constant fourth-wall breaking, and his head-spinning ADHD storytelling. So if the first two Deadpool movies made you feel like you might be losing your mind, you’ll want to steer clear of this one.

If you tend to revel in the craziness of it all, though, you’ll find that everything about this third Deadpool film is absolutely random and insane in all the right amounts, gleefully borrowing from Fox and Marvel properties while slinging a non-stop torrent of pop-culture references and brilliant cameos and wildly inappropriate gags at the audience. There’s so much going on here that you’ll probably miss most of it the first time around—and what you do catch will shock the laughter out of you before it races on to the next gag.

The 15-year friendly rivalry between Reynolds and Jackman only adds to the fun. The two heroes spend the film in one verbal or physical confrontation after another—yet it’s clear that they’re having so much fun doing it. Jackman sometimes seems like he’s in a completely different (and oh-so-serious) movie—but while those moments sometimes seem to go on a little too long, those heavier, angsty scenes perfectly balance Deadpool’s madness.

After years of watching Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman face off on social media, fans will love watching them face off in Deadpool & Wolverine. For diehard superhero fans, it’s a celebration of all of the nerdiest of superhero references. For everyone else, it’s just incredibly random and wacky—an irreverently hilarious adrenaline rush of a superhero thriller.

You can join this unlikely duo on their quest when Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in theaters on July 26, 2024.
