As tensions continue to rise in our country, it seems as though violence is on the rise, too. But that isn’t necessarily something new or unforeseen. And The Order tells a true story of a danger that’s been quietly building in the shadows for decades—and an agent who’s determined to stop it.
The Order stars Jude Law as Terry Husk, an FBI agent who takes a transfer to Idaho in 1983 to take a step back after years of fighting organized crime. But as soon as he arrives at his new post, he notices flyers posted around town promoting the local Aryan Nation group. Though the sheriff assures him that the group doesn’t cause any trouble, a young deputy, Jamie Bowen (Tye Sheridan), tells Terry about an extremist group that’s been planning terrorist activities and amassing explosives—and the two work together to investigate.
The investigation leads Terry and Jamie to Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult), the leader of a growing group that veers off from everything that Terry has learned in his years of experience with hate groups. And against the stunning backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, they uncover a terrifying plot to move from talk into action—to build an army to take back the country—that seems extreme even to the head of the local white supremacist group. It’s a chilling story—one that often feels all too timely and familiar.
As Terry continues to track Bob and his group—always just one step behind—the tension continues to build. Every plot here is well-executed—and Terry and Jamie have to think through each angle, each potential situation, hoping that Bob and his men will make any mistake that will help to take them down. Terry is smart and resolute in his quest to stop this group before the situation escalates—and Law gives a strong performance, taking a rather common character and portraying him as a tough seasoned agent who pushes the small-town law enforcement officers into action. But there’s something so eerie about Hoult’s Matthews—this stone-faced, calculating, confident young leader with his sights set on taking control at any cost. He may seem even-keeled and low-key, but that’s also what makes the character (and the performance) so haunting.
The Order tells a chilling true story of an underground terrorist organization set on using crime and violence to overthrow the government. The story may not feel entirely original, but it makes for a gripping thriller.
Join Terry on his mission when The Order arrives in select theaters on December 6, 2024.
