When Steve Rogers stepped away from his role in the Avengers, he passed the Captain America shield on to his friend and crime-fighting partner, paving the way for more patriotic superhero adventures to come. And in Captain America: Brave New World, Cap’s successor finds the President in need of his help.

Captain America: Brave New World finds the new Captain America, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), caught in the middle of an international crisis when he’s called in to help President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) negotiate a treaty sharing the rights to a powerful new element called Adamantium. After a failed assassination attempt sends the President into an underground bunker, it becomes clear that someone is determined to tarnish his legacy. In order to stop him, Cap and his team defy orders and set out to track down this dangerous genius from the President’s past.

In his search for answers, Sam encounters a threat that’s controlling the minds of some powerful people. Admittedly, the story is a little messy and difficult to explain, but it still checks the most important superhero-movie boxes. It’s big and explosive, with a strong and thoughtful hero in nearly non-stop action. And while the recent multiverse adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have often left audiences scratching their heads in confusion, this one doesn’t have the same level of complexity—so you don’t really need to put too much thought into following along. It’s simply a fun, old-school superhero adventure.

Of course, fans of Chris Evans as Cap will feel the subtle shift in tone here. Though the latest Captain America film works to maintain the grand, patriotic tone of a classic superhero film, it doesn’t feel the same under this new Cap. Anthony Mackie is a likable star—and his character carries on the hero’s ideals—but he doesn’t yet have that undeniable star power that Evans brought to the role. And while the film still has plenty of action and intrigue, there’s definitely a reason why it was given a February release date instead of a higher profile release in the middle of the summer.

Captain America: Brave New World still has the thrilling, effects-heavy action that fans have come to expect from the MCU. And while it may not be as powerful or as grand as some other films in the franchise, there’s just something wildly entertaining about a Marvel superhero movie—making it a fun way to spend a couple of hours on a chilly February weekend.

You can catch up with Cap when Captain America: Brave New World swoops down into theaters on February 14, 2025.
